about

Fall is a nostalgic elegy to childhood and growing up. We joke that it was inspired by a quarter-life crisis, but it has become much more of an appreciation of memory and our roots.

Sound Design plays an integral role in all of our music. In Fall, you'll hear all kinds of things, from a train passing by in the wind or a thunderstorm closing metaphorical doors. But the center piece of sound design in this single is the collage of home videos from Alba, Lillie, and Melissa's family vaults. Originally, this was a mosaic of samples from TV shows, games and films that brought us back to our memories of growing up in the 90's. In fact, we made it all the way to the mix with this take on the “nostalgia box” bridge (you can hear the original in our live footage below,) but in the process of mixing it we realized that's not the story we wanted to tell. There is something very vulnerable and real about sharing our actual family memories, and that's exactly what we wanted for the song.

If you pay close attention, you'll hear that the excerpts are also woven together to tell a continuous story - Alba's mother asks "what do you want to eat for dinner" and 7 year old Melissa responds, excitedly telling us she just had spaghetti. Alba's mom then says "I'll tell you a story, ok?" and next, we hear Lillie's grandfather reading here a book. Throughout, we hear the voices of children who are now adults with children of their own, parents captured in time when our relationships with them were so simple, and the treasured voices of those who have passed on years ago.

lyrics

~

Come, childhood hours
Come back to me
Don’t let me see what I’ve become
Close those fearless eyes I’ll never see again
‘cause it’ll never be Spring,
It’ll never be Spring

Brown leaves
covering the memories
Cloudburst
Fogging up my eyes

Where did all the flowers go?
Mom, is it too late to come home?
‘cause it’ll never be Spring,
No, It’ll never be Spring

Rain draws
Wrinkles on my windows
First snow
whitens up my hair

Where did all the flowers go?
Mom, is it too late to come home?
‘cause it’ll never be Spring,
No, It’ll never be Spring

Where did all the flowers go?
Mom, is it too late to come home?
‘cause it’ll never be Spring,
No, It’ll never be Spring

And I’m scared of the dark
Very, very scared of the dark
