about

“Sips of Oxygen” is about the moments before we lost Joanne, Lil's mother-in-law, when the vibrancy of her life collapsed into the act of breathing. But before it all changed. Before it all became so final, somehow it all came down to the rising and falling of her chest. In and out. In. And out.

As we produced the song together, we felt that a song about a memory so vivid and so personal had to lay it all on the table in the production. We dug into some crunchy moments in the bassline and got as crafty as ever in the sound design. We wanted to create a journey that was cinematic, immersive. In earlier drafts of the intro, we had crafted a demo version of a fourth of July party together from existing sound libraries, but somehow it never felt right. So the band decided Lil should bring a microphone to the family 4th of July and just see what happened. What you hear in the song is Lil’s family being a family on this uniquely important day. We hope it feels like sharing a piece of Joanne, hearing the voices of her family (now Lil’s family). This song is in honor of Joanne Burke’s memory.

lyrics

Sips of Oxygen

Put away the cups
Put away the bowls
Take out all the bottles and the cans
We didn't pour.

Put away the cups
Put away the bowls
Take out all the bottles and the cans we didn't pour
Carry all the tables to the basement there below
Fold her favorite flag and give the marshmallows
To the neighbor boy.

There is no party here anymore.

Standing in the doorway,
Taking in your blood
Breathing out and breathing in,
Never think of what you lose between sips of oxygen
Sips of oxygen

Never knew you spry
Before I heard you crying.
And I never knew the heights of you
Before I saw you eaten from the inside.

So how in the hell did it come down?
How in the hell did it come down
How in the hell did it come down
To sips of oxygen
To sips of oxygen
To sips of oxygen
